Beta Alpha Psi Students Place in Regional Competition

College of Business students showed well, taking home second and third place finishes, at the Beta Alpha Psi Northwest Regional Conference in Boise.

With more than 12 northwest schools represented, eight Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) officers and a faculty advisor attended the two-day conference and competitions. The OSU team placed in the two competitions it entered.

BAP Community Service Director Becky Thomas won the second place award in the service competition. She presented how the Oregon State BAP volunteers at local auctions such as the Old Mill Auction and the Zonta Auction.

BAP President Paul Freese and Activities Director Andy Kaiser won a third place award in a debate case competition in which all schools participated.

"It was great to be able to represent our school and our accounting program. Placing in our competitions is a great honor and says a great deal about the strength of our accounting program," said Freese. "We beat out schools such as the University of Washington, Seattle University and the University of Oregon."

The conference featured keynote speaker Felicia Thornton, the CFO of Albertsons, and speakers from Boise Cascade, Merrill Lynch, Performix Nutrition Systems, Simplot and Micron. Students also participated in a leadership seminar that involved numerous teamwork exercises and had opportunities to network with other chapters.

Beta Alpha Psi is a national scholastic and professional accounting fraternity formed in 1919. The OSU chapter provides members and pledges the opportunity to meet a variety of representatives from the accounting profession, hosts activities and programs throughout the year and keeps students updated on current accounting issues through presentations given by practicing professionals within the accounting industry. The chapter also provides the opportunity for students to participate in community service projects and to tutor other students.
