First Business Students Graduate from OSU’s Cascade Campus in Bend

One student dreams of a career as a commercial pilot, another is a mom who went to college with all three of her children, and yet another is a certified foster parent. The first five 2004 OSU Cascades Campus Business degree graduates--Angela Holmbo, Yvonne Marquez, Sara Refener, Mandy Sears, and Paul Smith--have interesting stories to tell.

Angela Holmbo grew up in Central Oregon participating in 4-H and winning often in state fair horse shows. This summer she will leave OSU Cascades Campus with a B.S. in Business Administration and hopes to get a full-time job. "My dream," she says, "is to buy a six-bedroom house out in the country where I can nurture foster children and where all of us can relax and play."

Yvonne Marquez received an Associate's degree from Central Oregon Community College (COCC) and then returned few years later to complete her Business degree through OSU. "I had the unique opportunity to go to college with all three of my children," she said. After graduation she will be working at Lance Air in their supply chain department.

Sara Refener, who acquired an Associate degree in Theology prior earning her B.S. in Business Administration, was the first in her family to receive a college degree. She currently works at Costco and as a part-time manager of a Bend area restaurant. "Eventually, I hope to work as a full-time manager or as a corporate business pilot," she said.

In 1999, Mandy Sears received her associate degree from COCC. Today, she also has a B.S. in business administration with a minor in sociology from OSU. "I dream of being a successful businesswoman who makes her mark on corporate America," said Mandy.

Paul Smith moved from California to Bend in 2001. He began his educational journey at COCC, transferring to OSU Cascades Campus to complete his business degree. "My plan after college is to get involved in whatever job or ministry God has planned for me," he said. "I have learned a great deal about myself in college."
